The Story Behind PSG Compass
PSG Compass was born not in a boardroom, but out of a musician's personal necessity. As a professional guitarist, I dove into the world of pedal steel about two years ago, acquiring a 12-string GFI with a Universal tuning. I thought I was getting the best of both worlds—E9 and C6—but I quickly discovered I had a unique monster on my hands.
The internet, books, and even paid courses had very little information on my specific setup. Most resources focused on standard 10-string E9 or C6 tunings with 3 pedals and 2 knee levers. My guitar, with its 7 pedals and 5 levers, felt like uncharted territory. Living in Mexico, where the pedal steel community is incredibly small (fewer than five of us in the whole country!), finding a teacher was out of the question. It was on me to explore the instrument and its vast capabilities alone.
As a coder in my spare time, I decided to build a solution. I started creating an application for myself: a personal learning tool to offload the complex music math and mechanics of my instrument. The goal was simple: help me find chords more easily on my own unique copedent.
After sharing the early versions with a couple of other steel players, their feedback and ideas were a revelation. They encouraged me to expand it to accommodate *any* tuning and copedent. What began as a personal project slowly evolved, feature by feature, into the comprehensive application you see today. It became a real app, built to solve a real problem.
My hope is that PSG Compass becomes a great tool for all kinds of players, from beginners to pros. It’s designed to facilitate and bend the steep learning curve of this intricate and beautiful instrument, helping you turn theory into music.
